# Website analytics tools, compared

> Ten website analytics tools offered to the public, compared by free plan or free edition, cheapest paid plan and the traffic tier it covers, what the price is based on, what each provider says about cookies and where data is stored, self-hosting, events and goals, data access and limits. Every price says which plan, tier and billing term it covers, and the date it was read. Statements about cookies, consent and privacy are the providers' own words, attributed to them; the page gives no legal guidance.

## How to read this

- **Verified**: seen on the provider's own page on the date shown. The link goes to that page.
- **Provider claim**: something the provider says about itself, not confirmed by us.
- **Not publicly stated**: the provider's pages do not say. That is not the same as "no".
- **"Our read" lines**: our interpretation of what a provider publishes. They are not scores, ratings or endorsements.

## Needs

- **Free to use**: The provider's own pages list a free plan with no end date, or a free edition you can install on your own server. Free trials are not counted. The tag does not compare what the free offers include or how large their limits are; the Free plan row gives each offer's limits.
- **No cookies by default**: The provider's own pages state that its tracking script does not use cookies, with no setting needed to get that. A page that says cookies are used by default, or that cookies are avoided only in an optional mode, does not count. The tag does not say what a website must or must not display to its visitors; the Cookies and consent row gives the provider's wording.
- **Self-hosting: run it on your own server**: The provider's own pages offer software you can install on a server you run, with a download, an install guide or a public source repository, and no sales contact needed. A page that lists self-hosting only as a custom option on request does not count. The tag does not say how much work running it takes, which licence applies or what the self-hosted edition leaves out; the Self-hosting row gives the details.
- **Choosing the data region**: The provider's own pages say you pick the region where its hosted service keeps your data, for example a US or EU option chosen at sign-up. A single fixed location, or self-hosting (the Self-hosting need), does not count here. The tag does not compare locations or say what the provider does with data in a region; the Where data is stored row gives the wording.
- **Events and goals**: The provider's own pages list custom events, goals or conversions on at least one plan or edition, which may be a paid one. The tag does not say which plan has them, how many are allowed or what they cost; the Events and goals row gives the details.

## Options

### Cloudflare Web Analytics

Cloudflare Web Analytics is a free report of page views, visits, referrers and page load times, set up with a JavaScript snippet or, for sites proxied through Cloudflare, automatically. Cloudflare states it does not use cookies or localStorage to collect usage metrics.

- Website: https://www.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/
- Based: Online
- Card on the page: https://allthingscompared.com/website-analytics-tools/#cloudflare-web-analytics
- Our read (interpretation, not a fact): People who want a free report of page views, visits, referrers and page speed, with no custom events.
- Fits: Free to use; No cookies by default
- **Free plan or free edition:** Free. Cloudflare's Web Analytics page offers it for free and its docs say it is available on all plans. It needs a Cloudflare account and a JavaScript snippet, and works without changing DNS or using Cloudflare's proxy. No trial period or end date is mentioned. The marketing page is undated. The About docs page, https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/about/, shows "Last updated Apr 17, 2026" and describes the no-DNS-change setup. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://www.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/)
- **Cheapest paid plan:** No paid Web Analytics plan is listed ($0 to use, USD). The FAQ says users on Cloudflare's Pro, Business and Enterprise plans get advanced HTTP traffic analytics from edge logs for sites proxied through Cloudflare; the prices of those plans were not read for this page. The FAQ shows "Last updated Jul 14, 2026". [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/faq/)
- **What the price is based on:** No price on the pages read, and no pageview, event or seat cap listed. The limits listed are on sites (10 sites not proxied through Cloudflare; no limit for proxied sites) and on Web Analytics rules by Cloudflare plan (Free 0, Pro 5, Business 20, Enterprise 100). The Limits page shows "Last updated Aug 12, 2026". [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/limits/)
- **Cookies and consent, as the provider states:** Cloudflare Web Analytics states it does not use any client-side state, such as cookies or localStorage, to collect usage metrics, and does not "fingerprint" individuals via IP address, User Agent string or any other data for the purpose of displaying analytics. Its docs state it does not collect or use visitors' personal data. The docs statement is on https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/about/ ("Last updated Apr 17, 2026"). The data-collection docs page says Cloudflare does not track individual end users across its customers' properties. [Provider claim · Nov 2, 2026](https://www.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/)
- **Where data is stored:** Not publicly stated. The Web Analytics pages and docs read do not say where its data is stored. The data-collection docs page says beacon data is sent to the site's own /cdn-cgi/rum path (proxied sites) or to cloudflareinsights.com (sites not proxied).
- **Self-hosting:** Not publicly stated. The pages read describe only the Cloudflare-run service and do not mention a self-hosted edition.
- **Events and goals:** The docs list page views, visits, page load time and Core Web Vitals as metrics, with filters, rules and dimensions (country, host, path, referer, device type, browser, operating system), and list no custom events, goals or conversions. The Web Analytics docs index (llms.txt) lists no events or goals page. High-level metrics page shows "Last updated Apr 16, 2026"; the dimensions page, https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/data-metrics/dimensions/, shows "Last updated Aug 21, 2026". [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/data-metrics/high-level-metrics/)
- **Data access, export and retention:** Dashboard with filters, and a GraphQL API (the docs mention it for extracting data and for referer-path data). No CSV export is described on the pages read. The FAQ says unsampled beacon data is kept for 7 days and then aggregated to around 10% for long-term storage, and that data for the previous six months can be accessed. The Limits page mentions the GraphQL API for customers with many tracked websites. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/faq/)
- **Sites, team members and limits:** Sites: up to 10 not proxied through Cloudflare, no limit for sites proxied through Cloudflare; the dashboard shows at most 1,000 websites at once. Rules (proxied sites only): Free 0, Pro 5, Business 20, Enterprise 100. Team members: not stated. Data you can access: the previous six months (FAQ). Six-month access is from the FAQ, https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/faq/. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/limits/)
- **Support:** The FAQ points questions it does not answer to the Cloudflare community page. The page footer lists a help centre, customer support and a community forum; the pages read do not say what support the free offering includes. The footer links are on https://www.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://developers.cloudflare.com/web-analytics/faq/)
- Not clear from public sources: The pages read do not say where the data is stored, what support the free offering includes or whether a CSV export exists. They list no custom events or goals, no team-member limit and no self-hosted edition.

### Fathom Analytics

Fathom Analytics has no free plan: plans start at $15 per month ($150 per year) for 100,000 monthly pageviews across up to 50 sites, after a 7-day trial that needs a card. Fathom states its tracking does not use cookies.

- Website: https://usefathom.com/
- Based: Online
- Card on the page: https://allthingscompared.com/website-analytics-tools/#fathom-analytics
- Our read (interpretation, not a fact): People who want one price by monthly pageviews across many sites, with events, an API and exports on every plan.
- Fits: No cookies by default; Events and goals
- **Free plan or free edition:** No free plan: the pricing FAQ answers "Nope" to whether there is one. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial; a card is required and is not charged until the trial ends, and the subscription renews automatically unless cancelled. The page is undated; the footer shows 2026. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/pricing)
- **Cheapest paid plan:** $15 per month billed monthly for up to 100,000 monthly pageviews (USD, US site, 50 sites included, regular price, no promotion shown). Billed yearly it is $150 per year ($12.50 per month, shown as 2 months free). The yearly figure was read with the page's switch to yearly pricing, which only changes the displayed prices. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/pricing)
- **What the price is based on:** Priced by monthly pageviews across all sites, in tiers: $15 (100,000), $25 (200,000), $45 (500,000), $60 (1,000,000), $100 (2,000,000), $140 (5,000,000), $200 (10,000,000), $290 (15,000,000), $380 (20,000,000) and $470 (25,000,000) per month billed monthly; custom above 25,000,000. Custom events and API requests count toward the pageview allowance. Over the limit: occasional spikes do not stop collection; for sustained overages Fathom emails about a larger plan and sends reminders, with extra time before dashboard and API access are paused, while it keeps collecting data. The over-limit wording is from the pricing FAQ and https://usefathom.com/docs/account/limits. The API wording is on https://usefathom.com/api. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/pricing)
- **Cookies and consent, as the provider states:** Fathom Analytics states it does not use cookies or fingerprinting: it hashes the request's IP address and user-agent with the site identity and a daily salt (SHA-256) into a site-specific visit signature, and the salt rotates at midnight UTC. Its pricing page lists "No cookie banners required" among what every plan includes. The page is undated. The pricing-page line is on https://usefathom.com/pricing. [Provider claim · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/why-fathom-analytics/cookieless-analytics)
- **Where data is stored:** Fathom Analytics states that EU visitors' pageviews are sent to its European servers, which strip the IP address, and that the anonymized analytics are then stored on its US servers; visitors outside the EU are routed to the closest region. It says this applies to all customers on all plans with no setup. No region setting is described. The "closest region" wording is in the FAQ on https://usefathom.com/features. Both pages are undated. [Provider claim · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/features/data-isolation)
- **Self-hosting:** No. The features FAQ answers "No" to hosting the data locally and says Fathom is a hosted product. The page is undated. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/features)
- **Events and goals:** Events (also called goals or conversions) for button clicks, form submissions, newsletter sign-ups and ecommerce, with an optional value and currency, on every plan; revenue tracking, UTM campaign tracking and saved views are also listed. Funnels are not listed on the pages read. The pricing page lists "Event and revenue tracking" in what all plans include. The help article is undated. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/docs/events/overview)
- **Data access, export and retention:** An Analytics API (v1, with an API token), CSV exports and email reports and exports on every plan. Every plan lists "Full analytics history while subscribed", which the page describes as ongoing data retention. Each API request counts toward the monthly pageview allowance. The CSV and retention wording is on https://usefathom.com/features and https://usefathom.com/pricing. A Google Analytics importer is also listed on the features page. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/api)
- **Sites, team members and limits:** 50 sites on the plans up to 500,000 pageviews; larger plans include more (75 at 1,000,000 pageviews, up to 350 at 25,000,000), per the plan data in the pricing page's markup. Extra sites come in packs of 50 for $10 per month or $100 per year per pack (up to 15 packs). Team members: not stated. Data kept while you are subscribed. The site counts above 50 are read from the page's plan data, not from the rendered text. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/pricing)
- **Support:** Email support from real humans on every plan; the contact page says support is by email rather than phone or hosted demo calls. A help centre and an API reference are listed. The pricing page lists "Email support from real humans" in what all plans include. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://usefathom.com/about/contact)
- Not clear from public sources: The pages read do not say how many team members a plan allows and describe no setting to pick a data region; the features page says Fathom is a hosted product, so there is no self-hosted edition to install.

### Google Analytics

Google's product page says Google Analytics gives you its tools free of charge; a paid Analytics 360 product needs a contract and publishes no price. The help pages list events, key events, funnel explorations, BigQuery export and a Data API.

- Based: Online
- Card on the page: https://allthingscompared.com/website-analytics-tools/#google-analytics

The collection limits are on https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9267744 and the export limit on https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9358801. All three articles are undated. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/12229528)
- **Cookies and consent, as the provider states:** Google Analytics states that Google tags set and read cookies to identify unique users across browsing sessions, that Google Analytics uses cookies to help measure success, and that in most cases the default cookie preferences do not have to be modified. Its help pages also state that in Google Analytics 4 IP addresses are used at collection time to derive location (country, city, latitude and longitude of the city) and are then discarded before data is logged in any data center or server. The developer page shows "Last updated 2026-07-22 UTC". The IP-address wording is on https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/11598602 (undated). Event collection allows 25 parameters per event. Recommended events: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9267735. Funnel exploration: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9327974. The key-event limit is on https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/12229528. All are undated. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9267568)
- **Data access, export and retention:** BigQuery Export (daily export of raw, unsampled event data; standard properties have a daily limit of 1 million events, and BigQuery storage and processing costs are billed on the BigQuery side), the Google Analytics Data API, and data retention controls: for user-level and event-level data a standard property can keep 2 or 14 months (26, 38 and 50 months are 360 only). Google-signals data is kept at most 26 months. BigQuery wording: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9358801. Data API: https://developers.google.com/analytics/devguides/reporting/data/v1. The help articles are undated. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/7667196)
- **Sites, team members and limits:** Up to 100 Analytics accounts, each with up to 2,000 properties; each property can have up to 50 data streams (30 of them app streams). Other per-property limits on standard properties include 100 audiences and 30 key events. Team members: not stated on the pages read. Retention of user-level and event-level data: 2 or 14 months. Property limits are on https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/12229528. Both are undated. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9303323)

- Fits: Free to use; Self-hosting: run it on your own server; Choosing the data region; Events and goals
- **Free plan or free edition:** Free plan with no end date and no credit card: the first 1,000,000 analytics events (which include web analytics) each month are free and the allowance resets monthly. It includes 1 project, unlimited team members, 1-year data retention and community support; on the free plan events over the limit are dropped. A free self-hosted edition is also offered. The pricing page is undated. The free tier is described as not a trial and not expiring. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://posthog.com/pricing)
- **Cheapest paid plan:** Pay-as-you-go, billed on usage with no minimum spend or annual contract stated: web analytics events cost $0.00005 per event after the first 1,000,000 free events each month, a rate that falls with volume (USD; billing limits can be set). [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://posthog.com/pricing)
- **Cookies and consent, as the provider states:** PostHog states its web analytics can skip cookies in an optional cookieless mode, which the docs show as a setting (cookieless_mode set to "always", or "on_reject" to count visitors who decline consent). In that mode it does not store a distinct ID in the browser and instead uses a hash calculated on its servers from a daily salt, IP address, user agent and hostname. Its web analytics page says the cookieless option means you do not need to add a cookie banner just for web analytics. The pages read do not state the default setting. The "optional" wording is on https://posthog.com/web-analytics. Both pages are undated. [Provider claim · Nov 2, 2026](https://posthog.com/docs/data/cookieless-tracking)

[Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://posthog.com/docs/self-host)
- **Events and goals:** The Web Analytics page lists pageviews, sessions, traffic breakdown, UTM tracking, web vitals and conversions ("track actions you want users to take"), notes that autocapture handles pageviews, and says the same events power product analytics and session replay. - **Data access, export and retention:** A REST API with personal API keys (analytics endpoints are limited to 240 requests per minute and 1,200 per hour), SQL queries in product analytics, and batch exports. The pricing page says events and metadata are retained for 1 year on the free plan and 7 years on any paid plan; after 1 year data may move to cold storage, so queries may run more slowly. The API limits are on https://posthog.com/docs/api and the SQL mention on https://posthog.com/web-analytics. All are undated. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://posthog.com/pricing)

## Questions

### How were these website analytics tools chosen?

Each measures visits to websites (page views and referrers at minimum), is offered to the public with a free plan, a free edition or prices published on its own site (no sales call needed to start), and was still available on the check date. Tools aimed only at session replay or product analytics inside apps are set aside the same way for every candidate unless their own pages describe website traffic reporting. The starting list was Google Analytics, Plausible, Fathom, Simple Analytics, Matomo, Umami, Pirsch, Cloudflare Web Analytics, PostHog, Piwik PRO, Heap, Adobe Analytics and Microsoft Clarity. Ten met the rule, and all ten are listed, which is at most ten and the most this page holds, so no extra rule was needed. Not listed: Adobe Analytics, because its pricing page shows no prices and sends you to an Adobe expert or a demo for a quote; Piwik PRO, because its pricing page shows only "from" figures for plans priced individually through a sales contact and lists no free plan; and Heap, which lists a free plan but was set aside under the product-analytics clause because the pages read describe product analytics and session replay and do not describe page-view and referrer reporting for websites. This says nothing about the quality of any tool left out. The page lists the ten in alphabetical order and does not rank them.

### Where do the prices and facts come from?

Each provider's own pricing page, plan comparison, documentation or help centre, and terms or data pages, read on 2026-11-02, with prices in US dollars unless the page says otherwise (Matomo's paid On-Premise bundles are priced in euros). Each price says the plan, the pageview, event or hit tier it covers and the billing term. Several pricing pages are built with sliders and billing switches, so they were read in a browser and the slider or switch was changed only to read the other displayed prices. Prices and limits change often, so check the provider before you buy.

### Why can the prices not be compared line by line?

The tools count different things (pageviews, events, hits or data points), start their paid tiers at different volumes (10,000 pageviews for some, 100,000 for others, 1,000,000 events for others) and bill by different terms. The Cheapest paid plan row therefore states the tier next to every price, and a lower number does not mean a lower cost for the same traffic.

### What does this page say about cookies, consent and privacy laws?

Statements about cookies, identifiers, consent, privacy and data ownership are claims each provider makes about itself. They are shown as provider claims, start with the provider's name and are attributed to it. This page does not say whether any tool meets a legal requirement or whether your site must show a notice to its visitors, and it is not legal guidance. Ask a qualified adviser about your own situation.

### What does "Not publicly stated" mean?
