# Web hosting, compared

> Nine web hosting companies that sell shared, WordPress or managed WordPress hosting to small businesses, compared by introductory price and the billing term it needs, the renewal price their pages show, sites and storage, domain, SSL and email, backups and security, WordPress tools, migration, performance claims, support and refund period. Every price says the plan, the billing term and whether it is introductory, and the date it was read. Uptime and speed statements are the hosts' own words, attributed to them.

## How to read this

- **Verified**: seen on the provider's own page on the date shown. The link goes to that page.
- **Provider claim**: something the provider says about itself, not confirmed by us.
- **Not publicly stated**: the provider's pages do not say. That is not the same as "no".
- **"Our read" lines**: our interpretation of what a provider publishes. They are not scores, ratings or endorsements.

## Needs

- **A renewal price of $10 or less per month**: The host's own pages show, as a per-month figure, a renewal or regular price of $10.00 or less for at least one plan that can host a site on your own domain, on at least one billing term the pages show. That term can be long, for example four years prepaid, and the Renewal price row gives it. A price the pages show only as a yearly or multi-year total is not converted, and a plan with no renewal price on the pages is not tagged. The tag does not say which host costs least in total or what the first term costs; the Starting price and Renewal price rows give each host's figures and terms.
- **A month-to-month price on the pages**: The host's own pages (a plan page or a help article on its own site) show a price for paying one month at a time, a one-month term, for at least one plan. A payment option inside a longer term, such as paying a one-year plan in instalments, does not count, and a page that says month-to-month exists without giving its price does not count. The tag does not say what the monthly price is or whether an introductory rate applies to it; the Starting price and Renewal price rows give the figures.
- **100,000 or more visits a month stated on a plan of $35 or less**: The host's own pages state a monthly visits figure of 100,000 or more for a plan whose regular (not introductory) price is $35.00 or less per month on a billing term the pages show. Visit figures are the hosts' own estimates and some hosts say they are not hard limits. A host that says only that traffic or bandwidth is unlimited or unmetered, with no visits figure, is not tagged, and nor is a host whose figure of 100,000 or more is only on plans priced above $35. The tag does not say how a site will perform at that traffic; the Sites and storage row gives each host's wording.
- **A free domain and free email for at least a year**: The host's own pages list, for its cheapest plan or for every plan, both a free domain name for at least the first year and email accounts or mailboxes included at no charge for at least a year or for as long as the plan runs. A free email trial of shorter or unstated length does not count, and a plan that lists a free domain but no free email, or the reverse, is not tagged. The free domain usually needs a billing term of a year or more and renewing the domain costs extra; the Domain, SSL and email row gives each host's wording. The tag does not compare mailbox numbers.
- **Phone support open to the cheapest plan**: The host's own pages say phone support is available to hosting customers without limiting it to higher plans: phone is named among the support channels for the hosting service or is listed on the cheapest plan. Pages that say phone support is not included on the cheapest plan, list it only on higher plans, or name only chat, tickets or email are not tagged. The tag does not say what hours the phone line runs or how fast it answers; the Support row gives each host's wording.

- **Money-back period:** 30-day money-back guarantee. Bluehost's user agreement says shared, VPS or dedicated hosting cancelled within the first 30 days of the initial term gets a full refund when requested through support. It does not cover cloud hosting plans, products with a monthly term, domain registration fees, AI products or setup fees, it applies to credit card payments only, and the standard fee for a free domain is deducted from the refund. Read in the built-in browser pane. The agreement says fees are otherwise non-refundable and allows 90 days to dispute a charge. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://www.bluehost.com/terms/user-agreement)
- Not clear from public sources: The page shows only the 36-month price, so monthly and 12-month prices are not stated. Email is a free trial of unstated length, bandwidth is not stated and Starter has no phone support. The money-back guarantee does not cover monthly terms.

The page's structured data shows a modified date of 2026-10-14. [Verified · Nov 2, 2026](https://wpengine.com/plans/)
- **Renewal or regular price:** Not publicly stated. The plans page says first-year pricing and coupons are valid for new customers purchasing Essential plans only and that 'Product renewal pricing subject to change'. WP Engine's small-business page says that after the promotional term the plan renews at the applicable standard renewal rate. No renewal figure is shown on the pages read.

The terms say that ending a plan early for any reason other than WP Engine's breach makes all remaining fees due, and that WP Engine gives a prorated refund of unused annual fees only if it ends the services for convenience. A support article says plan cancellations need 30 days' notice.
- Not clear from public sources: The pages show no renewal figure: they say first-year pricing is for new Essential customers and renewal pricing is subject to change. WP Engine's small-business page says plans start at $30 per month, which differs from the plans page. No money-back period, free domain or email is stated.

## Questions

### How were these web hosts chosen?

Each sells website hosting (shared, WordPress or managed WordPress) to small businesses, shows plan prices on its own US site and was on sale on the check date. The starting list was Hostinger, SiteGround, WP Engine, Kinsta, DreamHost, Bluehost, Namecheap, GoDaddy and IONOS. All nine met the rule and all nine are listed, which is fewer than the ten this page holds, so no extra rule was needed to set any of them aside. Bluehost, Namecheap, SiteGround and GoDaddy refused plain page requests and were read in a browser. Other hosts also show prices on their own sites and were not on the starting list, so they were not researched and are not listed: a quick look found prices on pages from InMotion Hosting, hosting.com, Cloudways and Flywheel, and HostGator's site refused a plain request and was not checked. This page does not cover every host. It says nothing about the quality of any host left out. The nine are listed in alphabetical order and are not ranked.

### Where do the prices come from?

Each host's own pricing page, help centre and terms, in US dollars on its US site, read on 2026-11-02. Every price says the plan, the billing term and whether it is introductory, with the renewal or regular price beside it where the pages show one. Introductory prices usually need a long prepaid term: Bluehost's and GoDaddy's pages show only a 36-month price, Hostinger's page only a 48-month price, and DreamHost, Namecheap and SiteGround show several terms. Kinsta and WP Engine show monthly and annual prices, and WP Engine's pages show no renewal figure. This page does not work out totals or per-month figures that the pages do not show. Uptime and speed statements are the hosts' own words and are attributed to them; this page does not compare or judge them. Several pages build prices with scripts or refuse plain requests, so they were read in a browser; billing-term switches were changed only to read other displayed prices, and no cart, checkout, trial or sign-up was started. Black Friday offers and free trials appear on several pages and can end without notice, so check the host before you buy.

### What does "Not publicly stated" mean?

The host's pages did not say. It does not mean the answer is no.
